Beginning Art Syllabus

I am very glad to have you in my class and look forward to getting to know you over this semester!
In this course we will:

Explore the fundamentals of making art
Use a variety of materials
Discuss and critique art
Learn to maintain a studio environment

It is expected that you will be invested in your work, coming to class always prepared, ready to work, and most importantly excited to make art!

Course Explanation and Goals

Beginning Visual Arts is the first level of visual arts courses for the North Carolina High School curriculum. This course will emphasize the study of the elements of art, the principles of design, color theory, art vocabulary, creative problem solving, materials application, and the following:

The Essential Standards of North Carolina:
– Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively.
– Apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression.
– Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes safely and appropriately.
– Understand the global, historical, societal, and cultural contexts of the visual arts.
– Understand the interdisciplinary connections and life applications of the visual arts.
– Use critical analysis to generate responses to a variety of prompts.

Required Materials

1. Pack of #2 HB pencils
2. Sketchbook / Journal—unlined (9” x 12” size is best)
3. Hand-held pencil sharpener (metal is preferred)
4. Eraser(s): Pink rectangle erasers
** Suggested, not required: Pack of colored pencils (Prismacolor is the best quality brand)

Grading Policy
Overall Grade for the course:

Quarter 1 (First 9 Weeks) - 50%
Quarter 2 (Second 9 Weeks) - 50%

Each quarter consists of:

Art projects - 60%

Daily assignments 40%

(written reflections, video responses, art warm up's, graded discussions in canvas)

Art Project Criteria

Includes full development and completion of work
A rubric is provided and will be handed in with each project (-5pts off project if missing)
Student examples of work will be provided

Classwork Criteria

Includes project studies, material explorations and written reflections
All completed in a timely manner.

Remote Learning

Daily attendance: You will be assigned a daily assignment to complete, in order to be marked present for that day. You must complete and submit it that day, to be counted as present for this class.
It is expected you commit to spending an average of 7.5 hours of time per week, on this course.
Your full participation and engagement with all assignments, zoom class meetings and creating work is highly encouraged, to get the most out of this class!
There will be 2 zoom meetings per week, 1 at the start of the week (Mon/Tues) and 1 on Friday.

Classroom Professionalism Criteria
You will start each week with 100 points, 20 points to be earned a day. These points will be awarded based on being prepared, participating positively, cleaning and following food / cell phone policy.

General Classroom Expectations

Respect everyone in the art room – with your words and actions.
- This includes your own artwork and for the works of others.
- NEVER damage or deface another’s work.
- Please give peers constructive criticism on their work in a positive way.
Be Safe: never throw anything, stay in your seat, and be careful with sharp tools.
Use art materials and equipment correctly
- Writing on tables, misuse of equipment, and the like is VANDALISM.
- This is your warning. Any occurrences will result in a referral.
No food or snacks, unless given permission. Water bottles are fine but to be kept on the floor.
Cell Phones are NOT to be used along with earbuds or headphones during class, except when required for a lesson / project.

Art Room Procedures

Be on time, quiet, and in assigned seat when bell rings.
Once the tardy bell rings the classroom door will be shut and you will have to get a pass to come to class.
Be prepared for class: have all your required materials in your bin, homework completed, etc.
Clean-up: cleanup your area and tools
Return materials to proper place.
Tables and floor must be clear and clean before leaving.
Remain in seat until bell rings. I will dismiss you when your area is clean.

Consequences
1st offense: Verbal Reminder / Warning
2nd: Contact parent / guardian and a note in ABE
3rd: Referral
